Walking trails, beaches & outdoors

Top hikes (Akamas, Troodos, Avakas), best swim spots, where to find quiet.

for All
Cyprus is small but the outdoor density is high. Three terrains in a 90-
minute drive: coast, plains, Troodos mountains.

THE BIG HIKES

· AKAMAS PENINSULA (Paphos district) — UNESCO biosphere candidate. Wild,
unspoilt. Aphrodite Trail (7.5km loop from Baths of Aphrodite), Adonis
Trail (~7.5km), Avakas Gorge (3km, sheer-cliff slot canyon).

· TROODOS (Limassol/Nicosia border) — Cyprus's mountain range, max 1,952m
Mt Olympus. Atalanti Trail (14km circular around the summit), Caledonia
Falls (4km return, the prettiest waterfall walk), Persephone Trail
  (3km, family-friendly).

· CAPE GRECO (Famagusta) — coastal cliffs, sea caves, blue grottoes.
Cape Greco National Forest Park has 4-5 short trails.

· KYKKOS / MILLOMERIS — for the spectacular monastery + the longest
  fall in Cyprus (Millomeris Falls).

WHEN TO HIKE

· Oct–May: ideal across the island. Cool, green, wildflowers in spring.
· Jun–Sep: only Troodos high altitude — coastal trails brutal in heat.
· Jan–Feb: Troodos has snow. Cape Greco still pleasant.

SWIM SPOTS THAT AREN'T BEACH RESORTS

· Blue Lagoon (Akamas) — accessible only by boat or 4x4
· Konnos Bay (Famagusta) — turquoise, less developed than Ayia Napa
- Lara Bay (Akamas) — protected turtle-nesting beach
· Mediterranean Caves at Ayia Napa
· Coral Bay (Paphos) — busier, family-friendly

CYCLING

· Coastal promenades (Limassol, Larnaca) — flat, paved, kids OK
· Akamas + Troodos — serious gravel/road cycling, summer brutal
· Karpaz peninsula (across the buffer zone) — emptiest coast roads
· Local clubs run Sunday rides — find them on FB groups

WATER SPORTS

· Latchi (Paphos) — sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding hubs
· Ayia Napa (Famagusta) — windsurfing + jet-ski
· Limassol Marina + Larnaca Bay — yacht charter, sailing schools
· Diving — Zenobia wreck (Larnaca) is a top-5 European dive site

WHEN THE HEAT WINS

· Troodos — 8–10°C cooler than the coast in summer afternoons
· Olympus Forest, Platres village, Kakopetria — go up the hill

WILDLIFE WATCHING

· Flamingos at Larnaca Salt Lake (Nov–Mar peak)
· Mouflon (endemic Cyprus mountain sheep) — Troodos
· Sea turtles nesting at Lara Bay (Jun–Aug)
· Migratory birds spring + autumn — Akrotiri marshlands

PRACTICAL

· Trail signage is variable — download .gpx or Komoot routes before going
· Mobile reception patchy in Akamas + Troodos interior
· Carry double water in summer (3L/day per person hiking)
· Snakes (mostly harmless, one venomous viper) — boots + alert
· Goat tracks aren't trails — stick to marked routes
