Food, drink & where locals shop

Mezedes, halloumi, wines, the weekly farmers' markets in each district.

for All
Cyprus eats simply. Mediterranean by recipe, Levantine by ingredients,
British/Russian by recent influence. Halloumi, fresh fish, olive oil, local
wine — and a tavern culture that runs the social rhythm.

WHAT'S ON THE TABLE

· HALLOUMI — Cyprus's PDO cheese (protected designation since 2021).
Grilled, fried, in salad, in everything. Made from sheep + goat milk
traditionally; cow-milk versions are cheaper but less interesting.

· MEZE — the traditional meal: 15–30 small plates over 2–3 hours, both
vegetarian (meze nistisimo) and meat/fish versions. A meze with a
bottle of wine for two is the standard "we should catch up" plan.

· SOUVLAKI / SHEFTALIA — every village has its grill. Souvlaki = skewer
of pork or chicken; sheftalia = lamb meatball-sausage wrapped in
  caul fat.

· KLEFTIKO — slow-baked lamb in a sealed clay oven for hours. The Sunday
  meal.

· LOUKOUMADES — honey doughnuts. Festival food.

· COMMANDARIA — sweet wine, recipe 4,500 years old, recognised as the
world's oldest named wine still produced. Christmas + Easter.

WHERE LOCALS SHOP

· SUPERMARKETS: Alphamega + Sklavenitis are the big two for general
groceries. Lidl is the go-to for value imports. Carrefour for
French/Mediterranean specialties. Smaller chains: Papantoniou (Paphos
strong), Smart (corner stores), MAS (Limassol).

· LAIKI (farmers' markets) — Saturday morning is sacred. Halloumi, olives,
honey, seasonal fruit/veg, eggs cheaper than supermarket. Each district
has a different schedule (Limassol Saturday, Nicosia Wed+Sat, Paphos
  Saturday, Larnaca Wed+Sat).

· FRESH FISH — from local harbours. Latchi (Paphos), Ayia Napa, Zygi
(Larnaca). €30–€80/kg for whole sea bass / red mullet.

· INTERNATIONAL — Cyrillic / Hebrew / British speciality goods all over
Limassol. Indian + Asian specialty in Nicosia and a few Limassol spots.

DELIVERY APPS

· Wolt — most coverage, English UI
· Bolt Food — aggressive pricing, slightly less coverage
· Foody — Cyprus-native app, strong restaurant network in Limassol
· Direct from supermarket apps (Alphamega, Sklavenitis own ordering)

WINE COUNTRY

The Krasochoria (wine villages) inland from Limassol — 40+ small wineries
open for tasting. Indigenous grapes worth seeking out: Xynisteri (white,
crisp), Mavro (red, traditional), Maratheftiko (red, deep, structured).
Many wineries take credit cards now; most do not.

CRAFT BEER

A small but growing scene: Aphrodite Brewery (Larnaca), Pivo Microbrewery
(Limassol), Hadji (Nicosia). Always check the local craft list at venues.

SPIRITS

Zivania (Cypriot eau-de-vie, ~45–50% ABV) — every village makes its own.
Brandies and Brandy Sours are tourist-traditional. Imported whisky is
~30–40% cheaper than UK retail.

DIETARY NOTES

· Vegan: trickier — halloumi is everywhere; coastal Limassol better
